July 2025 Tsunami

The tsunami wave generated by the M 8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka was measured by the pressure sensor at station CDIP 073 Scripps Pier on 30 July 2025. Maximum peak-to-peak displacement was ~30 cm, similar to that reported by the co-located tide gauge among the NOAA operated tsunami capable sensors at https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tsunami/.   

CDIP’s buoy station instruments are tuned to measure wind-generated waves of period 2-30 seconds, and the ~10 minute period of tsunamis is outside their sensitivity range.  Historic measured tsunami events can be found at the CDIP Tsunami Events Page.
